Designing Community Spirit and Giving the Town Planning Director Time Back

CLIENT

Green circular logo for Bowdoinham with a line drawing of a church, with text 'BOWDOINHAM ON BEAUTIFUL MERRYMEETING BAY' around the circle.

The Town of Bowdoinham's Planning Department oversees the town's robust calendar of community events, alongside its broader municipal responsibilities, all with a small staff and no dedicated marketing department.

CHALLENGE

A planner or notebook with a weekly schedule written in red ink, a black pen placed on the open page, and a ruler crossing the top right corner of the page. The schedule includes days of the week and notes for each day.

Like many small municipalities, the Town of Bowdoinham runs on a small team and a tight budget, with no dedicated marketing staff. Yet it hosts three major annual events, each needing its own coordinated brochures, signage, ads, and social content. The Planning & Development team needed to be focused on running the events — and other critical town priorities — not on producing marketing materials. That’s where we came in.

Three flagship events. No marketing department.

SOLUTION

A cluttered wooden desk with multiple open laptops, smartphones, notebooks, coffee cups, headphones, and various office supplies, with people working on their computers and using their phones.

A reliable, proactive design partner who knew what each event needed

We first took the time to understand each event's own identity, as well as the community’s spirit. We then designed materials to reflect the event, the season, and the town’s goals. We quickly became the Town of Bowdoinham's trusted creative partner across all three annual flagship events, year after year. Our scopes and contracts were straightforward and itemized - so the town always knew what to expect.

As the Director of Planning & Development for the Town of Bowdoinham, I partnered with Purpose & Proof on marketing and design for multiple large annual community events. Working with them made my job easier, and I always felt confident the work was in good hands. They brought fresh, creative energy and standout design work to our events, designing polished brochures, maps, event signage, social media posts, web pages, ads, newsletters, and more. They quickly understood our goals, community character, and each event's unique identity."
